Back ground of AWU

The Arakan state is located in western Burma bordering Bangladesh and India It has a diverse population of over four millions people including Arakanese, , Khame,Kaman. Dinet Mro, Thet and Mramargri. There is also several different religions groups including Buddhism, Christian and Islam.

Currently about eight thousands of the Arakanese people live in Tak area as migrant workers. Our organization was formed on December 3^rd, 2006 in Mae Sot with the goal of helping all Burmese migrant workers with social, health and labor problems. In addition; we also seek to help new Burmese migrant workers who coming from Burma to Mae sot of Thailand.

Aims of AWU

(1) To know and ask for labor rights

(2) To solve the problems of migrant workers

(3) To preserve the culture of Arakan

(4) To participate Arakan migrant workers with unity and solidarity in Arakanese social affairs, etc…

(5) To support and help for democracy of Burma

Future Plans

(1) To promote the role of education of Human rights, labor rights and knowledge for migrant workers

(2)To publish journals, and newspaper and pamphlet for migrants

(3) To provide vocational training and increase the skill levels of workers

(4) To help final solution to health AWU social problems through co-operation with other workers organizations

(5) To create network opportunities for migrant workers, allowing them to participate in unity and Solidarity in the Arakan affairs, etc…

Present Activities of AWU

(1) Education of Human Rights Training and HIV/ AIDS workshops.

(2) Networking with other group to solve labor problems facing migrant workers.

(3) Vocational trainings (sewing and knitting machine trainings)

(4) Opening office library.

(5) Participate in Democracy activities by cooperating with other es by co-operating with other organizations.

(6) Participating ceremony of the Anniversary for the Arakan state by joining with other Arakan organizations
